Kauai Post-Pandemic Tourism Analysis
Table of Contents
Background & Summary
Kauai was one of the only Hawaiian islands which completely shut down tourism during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, impacting both the physical health and the economy of the island. This analysis aims to explore the effect that this shutdown had on air travel once tourism reopened. Annual air visitor totals, types of trips, and year-to-year growth rates were all examined.
Key Questions
- What were air visitor counts typically like before the pandemic shutdown? How much were they impacted in the years after reopening tourism?
- What were the most common types of trips before the pandemic shutdown? Did that change after tourism reopened?
- Which type of trip experienced the greatest total post-pandemic growth?
Tools Used
- Datasets from Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism
- Google Sheets
- Microsoft Excel
Methodology
- Data was collected from the Hawaii DBEDT website, then transformed into a 11-year comparison by purpose of trip
- Once the data was cleaned, the rate of year-to-year growth was calculated and documented in an additional table along with total growth of visitors since 2020
- A final table was created using combined data from the three years before the pandemic and the three years after tourism was reopened
- Data visualizations were created documenting findings from the analysis in an easy-to-view format
- A final report was created, sharing key findings and visualizations
Key Findings
- Air travel for pleasure (tourism) recovered to pre-pandemic levels within the first three years after reopening
- By 2023 tourism had increased 1020.20% from 2020
- Post-pandemic growth varied across different types of air travel (business, tourism, sporting events, etc.)
- The pandemic did not significantly affect the types of air travel which were most common
